125 Colleges with No Supplemental Essay Requirement
Of all the steps in the college application process, writing essays is often the most challenging.
That’s why it can be helpful to apply to some colleges with no supplemental essays.
We’ve been working with students on their applications for over 20 years, so we’ve gone through the process hundreds of times.
We’ve researched dozens of schools with zero supplemental essays for the 2024-25 application cycle, weighed the pros and cons of writing optional essays, and offered tips for strengthening your application without relying on the essay.
If you don’t see your ideal school on the list below, don’t worry. Even if writing an essay feels daunting, you can look for support for your teachers, college counselor, family and friends, or an experienced writing tutor. Some colleges have no supplemental essays at all. That makes life easy, since you don’t have any decisions to make.
Other schools, though, make their supplemental essays optional. It’s up to you whether you answer these prompts or skip them. (We’ll get into whether you should write these optional essays below.)
And then there are schools that only require essays for certain applicants. For example, you might need to submit essays if you’re applying for a competitive major or if you want to be considered for a scholarship.
For some colleges, you’ll need to write essays if you’re not submitting standardized test scores (see our list of test-optional schools here). At a handful of schools, applicants are asked to write an essay if they don’t meet certain minimum academic standards.
Colleges with No Supplemental Essays
In the 2024-25 application cycle, these 125 colleges and universities don’t have any supplemental essay requirement.
There are a few caveats to keep in mind, though.
- Some of these schools may require essays for transfer applicants, even if they don’t for first-year students. If that’s you, make sure to double-check the application requirements.
- For state universities, different campus locations may have slightly different criteria, so look at the admissions requirements for the specific branch of the school you’re applying to.
- Even if you don’t have to write essays just for the college application process, there may be essays required if you want to be considered for scholarships or if you’re applying for specific degree programs.
- Some schools that don’t have a supplemental essay requirement do still require the personal statement essay (the “Common App essay” or the equivalent on other application platforms). If you want to avoid writing college essays altogether, take a look at our list of essay-optional colleges.
- And remember that even colleges that don’t require essays may still have optional or even recommended essays, or the option to submit writing samples.

Should You Write Optional Essays?
What if a school has optional extra essays?
On the whole, it’s usually a good idea to try to answer supplemental essay questions even if they’re optional.
- It’s an opportunity to share more information. Writing extra application essays gives you the chance to share more information than you could do otherwise, like discussing skills and interests that you weren’t able to elaborate on elsewhere.
- It can help you stand out. If not all the applicants are submitting admissions essays, doing so will make your application stronger by comparison.
- It demonstrates commitment. Writing an application essay even though it’s optional signals to a school that you’ve put effort into your application and you’re serious about attending.
On the other hand, there are situations where you may not want to spend the time writing even more college essays.
- You’re under time pressure. It’s ideal to start working on your applications the summer before your senior year – but for many reasons, that’s not always feasible. If you only have a short time to go before your applications are due, writing lots of extra essays at the last minute may not be realistic.
- You can’t reuse or adapt the essay, and this application isn’t a high priority for you. Since many schools use similar prompts for their additional essay requirements, you may be able to tweak your existing drafts to use for multiple applications. If that’s not the case, it’s still well worth writing a unique essay for a college that’s a high priority for you – but maybe not for every safety school on your list of colleges.
