Called “America’s first research university,” Johns Hopkins values teaching and research for its students and professors. It may be best known for its medical school, but Johns Hopkins also has undergraduate schools — the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, Krieger School of Arts & Sciences, Peabody Conservatory, and the School of Education. Overall, Johns Hopkins offers over 60 academic majors and 50 minors.
Located in Baltimore, MD, with four campuses, the respective schools have their own spaces for students to study and mingle. Like their tagline says, undergraduate research is a large focus at “Hopkins”, so there are several research awards and research assistant positions available for undergraduates.
Johns Hopkins also has distribution requirements instead of specific required courses for students, meaning that when it comes to taking courses outside of their majors, students have more flexibility — rather than being required to take a class like Intro to Environmental Science, they can choose their own courses in the natural sciences catalogue.
