What is attending USNA like?

Studying at the United States Naval Academy (or USNA) is a challenging academic experience. At a military academy, you’ll be training for a post-graduation placement in the Navy as a midshipman. In the summer before your first year, you’ll be required to attend “Plebe Summer”, which the academy describes as “no gentle easing into the military routine.”

Even when the summer ends, you’ll be held to a disciplined and structured schedule, with required rising at 6:30am and instruction for first years (or “plebes”) starting at 6:30am. Though rigorous, attending USNA provides excellent education, job placement following graduation, and fully-covered tuition, room and board, medical and dental care.

Although it’s not a traditional college, the United States Naval Academy has many of the same offerings as your typical school, including extracurriculars, Division I athletics, and intramural sports.

The United States Naval Academy has a competitive admissions process, with just 9.3% of applicants receiving an admissions offer last year. Since the Naval Academy uses a rolling admissions process, you’ll likely have a better chance of getting in the earlier you apply.

Unlike traditional college applications, you must also obtain a nomination from an official source, which could be U.S. Representatives or U.S. Senators representing your Congressional district or State or the Vice President of the United States.

*What does this mean? The middle 50% score range refers to students from the 25th to the 75th percentile of admitted students. So if 100 students were admitted and we ranked their SAT scores from lowest to highest, we’d be looking at 50 students’ stats (from student 25 through student 75).

What is the United States Naval Academy looking for?

The USNA’s admissions process is slightly different from the other that of other colleges you may apply to. Along with your academics and personal characters, the admissions committee will also be looking for students who:

  • Have excellent moral character
  • Are prepared for a challenging, multidimensional four-year program
  • Want the privilege to serve as a leader of sailors and Marines who volunteered to serve their country

You’ll be evaluated on your physical fitness, leadership potential, and motivation to be a midshipman and an officer in the Navy or Marine Corps. You can demonstrate your unique perspective through your essays, academic profile, fitness assessment, letters of recommendation, and activities.
