The 3 ACT Science Passage Types (and How to Ace Them)

Even though it’s now optional, ACT Science can still be intimidating. Topics range from geology to oceanography to outer space, including many areas that students have typically never studied in school.
But the key to ACT Science is understanding that it’s really a reading comprehension test. Understand the 3 key passage types, and you’ll understand how to crack the Science section – and be well on your way toward your goal score.
Below, we’ll go through the 3 types of ACT Science passages and the essential strategy you need for each one.

The 3 ACT Science Passage Types
First things first: what do you need to know about the ACT Science section?
- The ACT Science section is the fourth section of the ACT, and it’s optional
- Your ACT Science score does not count towards your composite ACT score (for more info on what that means, see our ACT score calculator)
- There are 40 questions on ACT Science, to be completed in 40 minutes, and 7 “passages”
- Each “passage” will contain some text and/or graphics in the form of charts, figures, tables, and/or graphs
- The subjects of these passages will always be related to science in some capacity: chemistry, biology, physics, earth science, space science, etc.
- There are three kinds of passages: Data Representation, Research Summaries, and Conflicting Viewpoints
- The questions will always boil down to data analysis, figure interpretation, and scientific knowledge
There’s a lot to keep in mind, which is why we’ve put together a guide to everything you need to know about ACT Science – as well as essential strategies to improve your ACT Science score.
Now let’s take a closer look at the three passage types on ACT Science.
- Research Summaries (2-3 passages)
These passages will give you multiple experiments or studies to compare. You can recognize them at a glance because they often contain subheadings like Experiment 1, Experiment 2, etc.
- Data Representation (2-3 passages)
These passages present scientific information in a more straightforward way, not with multiple studies. They’re typically accompanied by graphics, like tables or graphs.
- Conflicting Viewpoints (1 passage)
Here, you’ll be asked to compare the viewpoints of multiple scientists or students. You can recognize this passage at a glance because it will contain headings like Student 1, Student 2, etc.

Research Summaries Passages
The Challenge: You can feel swamped by too much information
The Solution: Skim the text and use the data to answer questions as much as possible
Here’s what a typical Research Summaries passage could look like. (We’re only showing one of the two experiments, but you get the idea.)

Just in the first few paragraphs of the passage, there’s an overwhelming amount of information. ACT Science has 40 questions to answer in just 35 minutes, so you don’t want to lose time wading through tons of details like this.
Instead, use the data to answer questions as much as possible. Then just use the text to confirm your answers.
For the passage above, a question might look like this:
Based on Figure 1 and 2, which of the following statements about the relationship between the facial emotion displayed and the maximal pupil size is consistent with the results of Experiment 1? When dogs viewed their caregivers’ or familiar people’s angry faces compared to happy faces, the maximal pupil size:
F. increased only.
G. decreased only.
H. remained the same.
J. varied with no general trend.
Just by looking at the figures, you can see that when dogs viewed angry faces, their pupil sizes were bigger than when they viewed happy faces (answer choice F). The question notes that this only applies to caregivers and other familiar people, so you know you can ignore the data on strangers.
If there are questions that you can’t answer with this strategy – there will likely be one or two, often the last question or questions given with the passage – consider flagging them to come back to if you have time later.

Data Representation Passages
The Challenge: You can feel swamped by too much information
The Solution: Skim the text and use the data to answer questions as much as possible
A Data Representation passage might look like this:

There’s a ton of information here! And there are a ton of geology jargon words that are hard enough to pronounce, let alone guess the meaning of.
So your strategy here is to figure out what you’re looking for, then figure out where to look.
You don’t need to understand any of the jargon terms – in this case, the names of minerals. You just need to use them to point you towards the right data.

To answer this question, you don’t want to know what andesite actually is. (The explanation in the passage is super interesting when you have time – but during the ACT, unfortunately, you probably don’t have time.) You just want to know where to look for this information.
The question will already point you in the right direction: you need to look at Figure 1. Within the Figure, zoom in on andesite.

This graphic looks unusual, but it can help to think of it as just a fancy version of a stacked bar graph. Looking at the andesite column, you can see that amphibole (whatever that is) accounts for just over 25% of the substance. Micas are another small percentage. Most of the material – over 50% – is plagioclase feldspar.
But the question doesn’t even ask for that level of detail – you just need to know what minerals are present in andesite at all. A quick glance at the figure allows you to select answer choice C.

Conflicting Viewpoints Passages
The Challenge: There’s a lot of information to read, process, and keep in mind
The Solution: Save this passage for last and use “headlines” to keep track of each viewpoint
One passage on ACT Science will ask you to compare the points of view of multiple students or scientists. This can be the most time-consuming passage for many students, since you actually have to read all or most of the text to be able to answer the questions. Because of that, it’s often a good idea to save the Conflicting Viewpoints passage for last.

The key to these passages is to start by creating “headlines” for each viewpoint as if it were a newspaper article. Then you can compare the viewpoints more easily than if you try to contrast entire paragraphs at once.
Marking up the passage is your best friend here. Often, the theories will diverge in subtle ways, so underlining or circling key differences can help you spot where they differ.
In this example, you might come up with the following headlines:
Theory 1: FN serves to protect the plant from predators.
Theory 2: FN serves to drain off excess water from the plant’s leaves.
You don’t need to get bogged down in the details of each theory description to come up with these headlines – notice that in both cases, the first sentence is the most important.
Now you can easily contrast these headlines with one another. Some questions will call for more detailed analysis, and that’s where your annotations on the text will come in handy.
Questions will often ask you which scientist or student is likely to agree with a certain idea, based on their hypothesis. The headline of each point of view will help you evaluate that without diving back into the sea of data.
